No book series has ever captured my imagination quite like The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. The saga spans across four books- Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and finally Inheritance, published in 2011. But the story didn’t end there—Paolini returned with two electrifying spin-offs that kept the story going long after the final page.
The books are set in the fictional continent of Alagaësia. The setting of the world borrows heavily from J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Paolini uses many races like elves, dwarves and dragons in his books and uses their characteristics from TLOTR. The series follows the protagonist Eragon in his journey to overthrow the corrupt king of Alagaësia after he finds one of the last remaining dragon eggs in the world.
The premise is simple but the story gets more and more complex and intertwined with every chapter. The worldbuilding in this series is the most vast and intricate out of any books I have ever read. Despite having a huge cast of characters, a massive world to explore, and tons of lore and politics, most of the scenes in the books feel adequately paced, almost never overstaying their welcome and keeping the story moving. The dynamic between Eragon and the dragon Saphira is fantastic to read. The action sequences are breathtakingly in-depth and tense. Despite being commonly used in many fantasy series, the magic system is interesting to explore and has well-set rules and features.
The story follows multiple character perspectives, allowing readers to deeply connect with each one and truly understand their journeys. Plot twists and revelations are delivered with precision, keeping the stakes high and the pages turning. While the sheer length of the story might be unsuited for a casual reader, it’s an absolute must-read for anyone who loves a fantasy setting or has the time to lose themselves in a richly crafted world.
