“When everyone is around you, and yet no one really sees you.”
Six months ago, I moved. A new city. A new school. A new start, they said — filled with possibility and people. And they were right. I’ve met people. I’ve sat in classrooms, exchanged smiles, shared jokes, joined groups, shown up.
But I’ve never felt more alone.
It’s not the kind of loneliness you can point to. Not the empty lunch table or the silent phone. It’s quieter than that. Softer. Like a whisper you keep hearing in a crowded room. A dull, constant ache beneath the surface of all your “I’m good, thanks” and polite laughter. It’s the kind that wraps itself around your day and follows you home.
Because I am around people. I message old friends. I call. I check in. And I know they still care. I know they still exist on the other end of the line. But something’s changed. Or maybe I have. The distance now lives not just in space, but in time… in all the little things we’re no longer part of in each other’s lives. In the silences that no longer feel familiar. In the pauses where we used to know exactly what to say.
And I start to wonder — is it me?
Maybe I’m too quiet. Or too careful. Maybe I’m not saying enough, or saying too much. Maybe if I smiled more, tried harder, stopped overthinking… someone would stay. Someone would see me.
Because that’s what I want. Not just company. Not noise.
I want stillness that doesn’t feel empty.
I want someone I don’t have to perform for.
Someone who hears the quiet and understands it.
But connection — real connection — feels like chasing smoke.
And I’m tired of reaching through the blur.
In this world of endless messages, group chats, likes and stories, we’ve never been more “connected.”
But somehow, it’s never been harder to feel close.
And I know I’m supposed to end this with something comforting.
Something like, “It gets better.”
But I don’t know if it does. Not yet.
All I know is that if you’ve felt this too — this quiet ache — I see you.
I don’t know if we’re doing anything wrong.
But I do know that to long this deeply means your heart is still soft. Still reaching. Still open. And that has to matter.
Maybe connection doesn’t come when we chase it.
Maybe it comes when we drop the performance.
When we let someone in without fixing the cracks first.
I’m still figuring it out.
Still hoping.
Still here.
And maybe, in this ache we carry, there’s the smallest beginning.
Not a promise — but a pulse.
A reason to stay soft. To stay open.
Because even if no one sees it yet — you’re still worth being found.
