Continuing with my World Whirl games, where Neo and I spin a globe and once he does a “Woof!”, I randomly land my finger on a new country to explore. This time we landed on a light green country surrounded by the mighty ocean on three sides—South Africa! A wave of nostalgia hit me instantly; I’d actually been there before with my parents. It felt like the globe was nudging me to revisit a cherished chapter of my travel diary.
South Africa, the southernmost gem of the African continent, is truly where land meets ocean in the most dramatic way. With its sweeping coastlines that witness the clash of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, this country has an energy that is wild and colourful. A glance at the atlas took me back to Cape Town, one of the country’s three capital cities, which is nestled between rugged mountains like the plateau-like Table Mountain and the ever-imposing Lion’s Rock and Devil’s peak. The mountain terrain tapers out to beautiful sandy beaches that are popular for surfing and other water sports.
A Week in Cape Town
Our stay in Cape Town was nothing short of magical. We kicked things off with surfing lessons at Muizenberg Beach, a place known for its iconic rainbow-colored huts and perfect beginner waves.
The next day was all about elevation—taking the cable car up to the iconic Table Mountain, where the views stretched endlessly, and later paragliding off Lion’s Head, soaring over the mountains and the coast like a bird.
On day three, we hit the road in a rental car for an unforgettable safari adventure at Aquila Game Reserve. We watched giraffes gracefully move through the bush, saw lions basking under the sun, and marveled at the goofy charm of ostriches strutting around.
Day four brought a dose of local flavor with the Kiff Kombi road trip. “Kiff” is South African slang for cool. This road trip took us to hidden spots where we explored South Africa’s incredible vegetation and landscapes, learning how this country balances African wilderness with colder flora influenced by ocean winds and its proximity to the South Pole.
The fifth day was dedicated to history and culture. We wandered through the vibrant streets of Bo-Kaap, a neighbourhood with brightly-coloured houses and rich Malay history. We also explored the bustling V&A Waterfront, full of shops, restaurants and scenic views of the harbour.
Of course, a trip to Cape Town isn’t complete without meeting its most unexpected residents—penguins! We spent day six watching these charming creatures waddle along Boulders Beach. Later, we enjoyed a wine tasting at Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine estate. We also visited local favorites like Truth Coffee, Honest Chocolate, the Biscuit Mill (a market full of local food and crafts) and the Woodstock Gin Co. for a small distillery tour.
We wrapped up our adventure with an exhilarating ocean kayaking experience on the seventh day, paddling across waters where two oceans meet, and having an occasional dolphin join us on the waves.
South Africa, with its diverse wildlife, dramatic landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, was more than just a destination. It was a vibrant memory come alive again, thanks to a spin of the globe and a love of travel.
