Iran’s Descent: Echoes of Iraq

Iran’s Descent: Echoes of Iraq

By Rachna Bura

Unfolding Crisis: The Uranium Alibi

While the official trigger for the escalating tensions may be Iran’s pursuit of weapons-grade uranium, the true fulcrum of the conflict lies in Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ideological axis of confrontation is not merely nuclear capability, but the regime itself.

Western Ambiguity: A Strategy Lost in Translation

The West’s approach to Iran appears increasingly muddled—an amalgamation of inconsistent policies, ethical paradoxes and strategic hesitation. US and Israel have faltered in identifying and striking at the Centre of Gravity (COG)—the leadership.

The Centre of Gravity and the Peripheral Illusions

The downfall of Khamenei could have dismantled Iran’s nuclear ambitions at their root. Israel, acutely aware of this, targeted the leadership as the primary objective—aiming to avoid prolonged peripheral engagements. Yet, the U.S., reportedly vetoed this decisive course of action.

This misstep has prolonged the conflict, escalating the cost—militarily, economically and morally. One is left to ask: How could the very nation that birthed modern operational art miscalculate its application so severely?

Aftermath of an Iranian Collapse: Regional Reverberations

No nation stands to lose more from Iran’s destabilization than Russia. The centuries-old dream of reaching warm waters—through Iranian corridors—is shattered, at least for the foreseeable future. This loss may push Moscow toward a desperate geopolitical legitimacy to India’s claim over Gilgit-Baltistan having some meagre access to warm waters, especially as Pakistan drifts back into the U.S. lap again, albeit for the time being.

India: The Bystander in the Storm

As two geopolitical titans—America and China—lock horns in the region, India cannot afford to remain a passive observer. The tremors are dangerously close to home. The Rimland arc, stretching from Lebanon to Iran, is fast becoming a western bastion, hemming in adversaries and establishing forward military presences. This transformation is not without consequence for New Delhi.

The Last Domino: Pakistan on the Precipice: An Emerging Theatre of Superpower Contest.

With much of West Asia reshaped by American interventions, only Pakistan remains untouched—the last piece on the board. Its strategic geography and existing instability make it the next likely conflict zone between China and the U.S. The looming failure of CPEC, hard to digest for Beijing, is triggering covert manoeuvring and betrayals.

As tensions mount, India’s western front regains strategic primacy. National security doctrine must now pivot back to old frontiers, as war inches closer to our borders.

The Strategic Compass: A Delicate Balancing Act

The coming tectonic shifts in Eurasia will place India at the centre of strategic bargaining. Russia, now marginalized in the region and seeking relevance, is a diplomatic lever India must wield wisely. Simultaneously, both China and the U.S. need India—for very different reasons. China cannot withstand US pressure from three directions—East, West, and South.

From Observer to Player: The Moment of Decision

In this volatile game of geopolitical chess, India holds many Kings, if not the Aces. But a winning hand is useless if unplayed. The region is in flux; the great hunt has begun—and India must not be found a sitting duck when the predator prowls the neighbourhood.

 Crafting India’s Strategic Endgame

India’s greatest strength today lies in its strategic patience, its credible deterrence and ability to engage without entanglement. But the moment is arriving when engagement becomes imperative. In the face of a crumbling Iran, a distracted Russia, a pivoting America, and a nervous China—India must play its hand, and play it with foresight.

The chessboard is live. The pieces are moving. It is time to choose the endgame.
