You’re Stronger Than You Think
Anxiety isn’t just everyday worry, it can feel like a never-ending buzz in your brain, a racing heart for no reason, or that weird pit in your stomach that won’t go away. You might look calm on the outside, but inside, it feels like you’re running a marathon you never signed up for.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. Many teens experience anxiety, especially in today’s high-pressure world filled with exams, expectations, social media, and what-ifs. The good news? There are real, healthy ways to manage it.
What Does Anxiety Feel Like?
Anxiety shows up in different ways for different people. For some, it’s overthinking small things. For others, it’s feeling shaky, short of breath, or even frozen. You might avoid situations or people that make your heart race. Recognizing these signs is the first step toward taking back control.
Grounding Techniques That Work
When anxiety hits, grounding helps bring you back to the present.
Try the simple method of 5-4-3-2-1.
Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.
It may sound small, but it really helps when your thoughts feel out of control.
Build Calming Habits
Make time for things that soothe your mind:
- Deep breathing or meditation
- Listening to music that relaxes you
- Journaling your thoughts before bed
- Spending time offline or in nature
- Sleeping enough and eating well
You don’t need to “fix” everything in one day. Even a short walk or a phone-free hour can calm your system.
Challenge the Thought Spiral
Anxious thoughts are often untrue. “What if I mess up?” or “Everyone thinks I’m weird” aren’t facts they’re fear-based guesses. Ask yourself:
What evidence do I have this is true?
What would I say to a friend feeling this way?
Being kind to yourself is part of fighting anxiety.
