Speak Up to Stay Safe
Getting harassed online is scary. Whether it’s creepy DMs, threatening messages, or someone misusing your photos, it can leave you feeling anxious, helpless, or even ashamed. But here’s the truth, you’re not powerless and you’re not alone.
Cyber harassment is a crime, and you have the right to protect yourself. This guide will help you take action confidently, step by step.
First, Know What Counts as Cyber Harassment
Cyber harassment includes, repeated unwanted messages or threats, sharing private images or videos without your consent, Doxxing (publishing personal info) and online stalking or impersonation including sexually explicit messages or blackmail.
If it makes you feel unsafe, it matters, and you have the right to act.
Collect Evidence
Before blocking the harasser, take screenshots of messages, photos and chat logs. Note usernames and profiles including timestamps and any threats.
Store these screenshots securely in a private folder or email them to yourself. This is important if you choose to report the incident later.
Block and Report
Use in-app features to block and report the profile. Don’t engage, argue, or retaliate, it can make things worse and tighten your privacy settings so strangers can’t message or tag you.
File an Official Complaint
Go to the National Cyber Crime Portal:
www.cybercrime.gov.in
You can report anonymously or file a full complaint. There’s also a helpline number 1930 for immediate support.
Important Tip: If you’re under 18, involve a parent or trusted adult, they can help you file and follow up.
Find Support That Cares
Dealing with harassment can feel isolating, but you don’t have to go through it alone.
Reach out to your school counselor or teacher. A trusted family member or sibling can also help. Helplines like iCALL (+91-9152987821) are available to ameliorate the anxiety.
