A few months ago, I shared my story “Bridging Dreams”, how a simple decision to spend a few summer days teaching orphaned and disadvantaged children in Wellington turned into something far greater. What began as a small personal initiative soon grew into a collective mission to make quality education accessible for children who need it most.

Back then, I wrote about discovering U&I, an inspiring organisation that connects volunteers from across India with underprivileged children through online classes. However, since U&I had no centres in remote areas like ours, we decided to take the initiative ourselves. We began assisting in setting up the centres. Our goal was simple yet ambitious, to set up two digital learning centres, one for boys and one for girls at CMS, a dedicated organisation which cares for the underprivileged, so that these children could access quality tuitions and mentorship through online classes.
Today, I’m excited to share that our project has taken its first big step forward. We successfully launched the Ice Breaker session, and it was everything we hoped for and more! The very first online class of U&I and CMS for 28 children in Wellington, full of curiosity and joy, their eyes lighting up as they met their tutors from across the screen. There was laughter, a few shy smiles and soon, the room was buzzing with energy. It was learning, but it felt like a celebration. The children were divided into two groups (boys and girls), each supported by dedicated volunteer tutors from U&I. Seeing their excitement as they interacted with teachers reminded me why this project matters so much.
Through generous support from CMS, U&I, friends, family, and well-wishers, we’ve secured a safe space, collected 19 laptops so far and few volunteer tutors have joined our cause.
Of course, our journey is still ongoing. A few challenges remain, the girls’ hostel faces poor internet connectivity due to its remote location, which caused interruptions during class. Some laptops still lack chargers and headphones, limiting full participation. But these hurdles only strengthen our resolve.
We’ve set our sights on a clear goal, to fully establish two functional learning centres with 10 laptops each and a 2 : 1 student–tutor ratio for more focused and comprehensive learning. Every small step we take brings us closer to that dream.
